How to Care for Your Handwoven Patola Silk Saree

A Saree Made to Last Generations — With the Right Care

A handwoven Patola silk saree is not just a purchase — it is an heirloom. Woven over months using the rare double ikat technique, a Patola is built to last decades, even centuries, when cared for properly. Many families treasure Patolas passed down through three or four generations, their colours still vivid, their silk still lustrous.

Here is everything you need to know to keep your Patola in perfect condition for years to come.

Cleaning Your Patola

Always Dry Clean

Patola silk sarees should always be dry cleaned by a trusted professional who has experience with handwoven silks. Never machine wash or hand wash a Patola — water can cause the silk fibres to shrink, the dyes to bleed, and the weave structure to distort.

When taking your saree to the dry cleaner, mention that it is a handwoven double ikat silk and ask them to avoid harsh solvents. A gentle dry clean once or twice a year — or after each wear if worn at a wedding or outdoor event — is sufficient.

Spot Cleaning

For minor spots, do not rub. Gently blot the area with a clean, dry white cloth to absorb as much of the stain as possible, then take it to a dry cleaner promptly. The faster a stain is treated, the better the outcome.

Storing Your Patola

Wrap in Muslin or Malmal

Never store a Patola in a plastic bag or airtight container. Silk needs to breathe. Wrap your saree loosely in a clean white muslin (malmal) cloth before storing. This protects the silk from dust while allowing air circulation.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Store your Patola away from direct sunlight and artificial light. Prolonged exposure to light — even indirect light — can fade the vibrant natural dyes over time. A dark wardrobe or drawer is ideal.

Fold, Don’t Hang

Silk sarees should be folded and stored flat, not hung. Hanging a silk saree causes the fabric to stretch along the fold lines over time, weakening the fibres. Fold your Patola along different lines each time you store it to prevent permanent crease marks.

Use Neem Leaves or Cedar, Not Naphthalene

To protect against insects, place dried neem leaves or cedar blocks in your wardrobe. Avoid naphthalene (mothballs) — the chemicals can damage silk fibres and leave a persistent odour that is difficult to remove.

Wearing Your Patola

Avoid Perfume and Deodorant Contact

Spray perfume and apply deodorant before wearing your saree, and allow them to dry completely. Alcohol-based fragrances can stain silk and weaken the fibres over time.

Be Mindful of Jewellery

Rough or sharp-edged jewellery — particularly bangles and necklace clasps — can snag the silk threads. Smooth, polished jewellery is the safest choice when wearing a Patola.

Airing After Wear

After wearing, air your saree in a shaded, well-ventilated area for a few hours before folding and storing. This removes any moisture absorbed during wear and keeps the silk fresh.

Re-folding Periodically

Even in storage, it is good practice to refold your Patola every few months along slightly different lines. This prevents the silk from weakening along permanent fold lines and keeps the saree in excellent condition.

A Living Heirloom

With the right care, your Heritage Weaving Patola will not just last your lifetime — it will be something you pass on. These sarees have survived centuries precisely because generations of families understood their value and cared for them accordingly.
